We aren't on cash basis accounting for running our business because it would hurt us on seeing actual revenue production per period, but we do use it for taxes at a few of my companies.  If I am understanding you correctly, the easiest way, if you are on quickbooks, is to set up each business unit as a class in quickbooks and have them automatically push to those classes.  Then, you can run a P&L by class in quickbooks.  Also, quickbooks allows you to run them on a cash basis.  I am not sure what you are asking for by wanting to see the invoice item business unit level.  If you want to see revenue per invoice item, per business unit, that can be done pretty easily in custom reports but I am not sure if that is what you are looking for.
