What can cause a membership not to be able to be renewed? Is it because it is set up ongoing or is it because it is not to the expiration date? Please any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

^^That is correct- the membership duration must be Fixed in order to use the Renewal function. You would also need to create a Service in the Pricebook for the Renewal task and link it to the Membership in Settings.

My understanding is that if the membership is set up as ongoing then it has no end date to need to be renewed.
Also did you set up the renewal task? You would need to specify the task or service for renewal to be able to renew as well.
