Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with QuickBooks Payroll where I get an error message saying "Can’t Read Payroll Setup Files" when trying to update payroll. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what steps did you take to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

To fix the QuickBooks Payroll Update Error where it can't read payroll setup files, follow these steps:

  1. Restart QuickBooks and Your Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches.

  2. Update QuickBooks to the Latest Version: Ensure you're using the latest version of QuickBooks. Go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop > Update Now.

  3. Run QuickBooks as Administrator: Close QuickBooks, right-click the QuickBooks icon, and select Run as Administrator. This provides the necessary permissions to access payroll setup files.

  4. Verify QuickBooks Desktop Installation: Go to the Control Panel, select Programs and Features, find QuickBooks, and choose Repair to fix any installation issues.

  5. Rename the CPS Folder:

    • Navigate to the CPS folder on your computer (typically found in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks x.x\Components\Payroll).
    • Rename the folder to something like "CPSOLD."
    • Reopen QuickBooks and attempt the update again.
  6. Use QuickBooks Tool Hub: Download and run the QuickBooks Tool Hub to fix common errors. Use the Program Problems tool within it to repair your QuickBooks installation.

  7. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings: Ensure your firewall or antivirus software isn’t blocking QuickBooks. Add QuickBooks as an exception if necessary.

  8. Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop: If all else fails, consider uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks. Ensure you have your license information before doing this.

If the error persists, contact QuickBooks support for more advanced troubleshooting.
