Hi community,

I’m having trouble with my QuickBooks Portable Company File. I created a portable file to move my data, but now I can't open it on a different computer. The error message reads, "File cannot be opened." Has anyone experienced this issue? Any solutions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

To open a QuickBooks Portable Company File (.QBM):

  1. Launch QuickBooks: Open your QuickBooks application.

  2. Open Portable File: Go to File > Open or Restore Company.

  3. Select Portable File Type: Choose Restore a portable file and click Next.

  4. Locate the File: Browse to the location of your .QBM file, select it, and click Open.

  5. Save as a New File: Choose a location to save the restored file as a new company file, then click Save.

  6. Complete the Restore: Follow any prompts to complete the process.

The portable file will be converted into a full company file format (.QBW) that you can use in QuickBooks.
